Start with the boxes, not the doors
A kitchen refresh feels like a decision about colour and door style. In practice the boxes decide what is possible. Open one base cabinet and look at the material under the sink. If it is swollen, soft, or stained dark, that box has taken on water and no new door will fix it.
Check these four things before you choose anything.
- Box material. Plywood handles moisture better than particleboard. If the boxes are particleboard and have stayed dry, they usually have years left.
- Square corners. Press a square into a cabinet opening. A racked box will make new doors sit unevenly.
- Hinge screw hold. Try to tighten a hinge screw. If it spins in the wood, the frame needs repair first.
- Signs of movement. Gaps that open and close through the year mean the boxes move with the humidity. Refacing can still work, but the contractor must allow for it.
What a refresh can change, and what it cannot
A refresh changes surfaces. New doors, new drawer fronts, new hardware and a new finish do most of the work visually. What a refresh does not change is the layout. A cabinet without a drawer bank stays without one. A door that opens into a walkway still opens into a walkway.
If storage is the real problem, plan for new boxes in the places that matter and reface the rest. That middle route is often the best value in a Birmingham kitchen.
Light, colour and the size of the room
Colour decisions are easier to get right when you account for the light the room already has.
- North-facing kitchens take cooler light. Warm whites and woods read better than cool greys.
- Dark doors in a small kitchen reduce the sense of space. A light door on the uppers and a darker base is a common way to keep contrast without closing the room in.
- Ask for a door sample and look at it in your own kitchen, at night and in daylight. A showroom has different light.
The order of work
- Look at the boxes. Decide what must be replaced and what can be refaced.
- Decide the layout. This is the only step that needs decisions about plumbing and electrical work.
- Choose the door material and finish.
- Choose hardware. Hinges and drawer glides affect how the kitchen feels day to day.
- Have the kitchen measured by the person who will install.
- Order. Lead time is usually longer than the installation itself.
What to confirm in writing
Ask for the door material, the box material, the hardware brand, the delivery window and the warranty in writing. Confirm whether removal and disposal of the old cabinets is included. Ask who measures the kitchen -- if the seller measures and the installer fits, make sure both agree before the order is placed.
