Three ways to get new kitchen cabinets
Homeowners in Birmingham usually choose between three routes. Each one solves a different problem.
- Refacing. Keep the boxes, replace the faces and doors. Fastest and least expensive. Good
when the layout works and the boxes are sound.
- Refacing plus new boxes where needed. Keep the good cabinets, replace the failed ones.
Useful when one or two boxes have water damage but the rest are fine.
- Full replacement. New boxes, new doors, new layout. This is the only route that changes
where things are stored.
Stock, semi-custom and custom
These three words describe how much the cabinet is made to fit your room.
- Stock cabinets come in fixed widths and depths. They cost the least and arrive fastest. You
fill gaps with filler strips, which is why the finished run can look uneven.
- Semi-custom cabinets start from a standard line and change within limits. You can adjust
width and depth, and choose from a wider door range.
- Custom cabinets are built to the measurements of your room. They suit odd wall lengths,
sloped ceilings and corners that stock sizes cannot fill. They cost the most and take the longest.
What actually drives the price
Two kitchens of the same size can differ a lot in cost. These are the usual reasons.
- Door style and material. A painted slab door and a solid-wood raised panel door are not the
same product.
- Box construction. Plywood boxes hold up better near water than particleboard. Drawer boxes
and drawer glides vary in the same way.
- Number of drawers. Drawers cost more than doors because of the box and the hardware.
- Storage accessories. Pull-outs, dividers and corner systems add to the total.
- Removal and disposal. Taking out the old cabinets and hauling them away is work, and it is
sometimes quoted separately.
- Layout changes. Moving a sink or a range means plumbing and electrical work. That is a
different trade and a different cost.
Measurements to check before you order
Bad measurements cause most delays. Confirm all of these before you sign.
- Height from the floor to the underside of the upper cabinets.
- Depth of the base cabinets and the depth of the countertop above them.
- Width of every opening, measured at the top and at the bottom.
- The position of the sink, the range and any gas line or outlet inside a cabinet.
- The height of the ceiling, where cabinets run to the ceiling.
- Whether the walls are square, and how much they are out.
Questions to ask before you sign
- Which parts are stock, which are semi-custom, and which are custom?
- What are the boxes made of, and what are the drawer boxes made of?
- Who measures -- the seller or the installer?
- What is the delivery time, and what happens if it slips?
- What is the written warranty on the cabinets, and on the installation?
- Does the quoted price include removal and disposal of the old cabinets?
